Fortunately, Hawaii stood out as one of the few states untouched by the widespread flu. Armed with an arsenal of sanitizers—gels, wipes, and sprays—we embarked on our journey. And let me tell you, we absolutely adored our time there. It truly is a perfect sanctuary for families. The resort boasts multiple swimming pools, including shallow areas ideal for little ones to splash and play, expansive sandy areas for toddlers to build castles, and refreshing shave ice stands. But perhaps the most captivating feature was the stunning view from our lanai (balcony)—pure bliss!

Kauai Ultimate Helicopter Tour: A Breathtaking Perspective of the Garden Isle

Without a doubt, the helicopter tour was the absolute highlight of our entire trip, an experience so profound I wanted to share it right away. While Grant might not appear ecstatic in the photo below—likely overwhelmed by the sheer disbelief of being inside a helicopter and his steadfast refusal to wear headphones, leading to those teary eyes—the wonder of the moment was palpable.

If you find yourself on Kauai, a helicopter ride is an absolute must-do, and here’s precisely why. The majestic Napali Coast stands as the island’s premier attraction, a natural wonder that simply begs to be seen. The safest and most awe-inspiring way to fully appreciate its magnificent, rugged beauty is undoubtedly from the air or by sea. While tempting boat tours are plentiful, they often come with age restrictions (typically three years and older), making them impractical for families traveling with toddlers.

Helicopter tours, however, usually do not have an age restriction. A crucial tip for families: if your child is over two years old, you’ll generally need to purchase a separate seat for them. Since Grant had just celebrated his second birthday, we were fortunate enough to bring him along as a lap child, making this incredible experience accessible for our family.

As our first-ever helicopter ride, it was an experience beyond words. Beyond the unforgettable helicopter ride, a significant part of our Kauai experience involved leisurely drives along the stunning coastline, revealing one breathtaking scenic view after another. We dedicated an entire day to exploring the North Shore, driving all the way up to Ke’e Beach, which marks the furthest point accessible by car on that side of the island. Another day was set aside for the equally captivating South Shore.

When I mention devoting a day to driving, I mean a relaxed pace, typically spending no more than three to four hours in the car, interspersed with plenty of stops. Kauai, after all, isn’t a massive island, which makes it incredibly appealing. Its compact size contributes to that wonderful laid-back atmosphere, allowing visitors to truly immerse themselves in its beauty without feeling rushed. It’s perfectly sized for exploration and discovering hidden gems at your own pace.

Poipu Beach is arguably one of the most popular beaches on the island, and we felt it was essential to experience it. It truly is a beautiful beach, well-equipped with a convenient service center where you can grab a bite to eat, enjoy a refreshing shave ice, or rent equipment. However, its popularity means it can get quite crowded. For a more tranquil experience, we opted to spend most of our time at Baby Beach, a smaller, less-crowded gem just a couple of miles away. Baby Beach, with its calm, shallow waters, proved absolutely perfect for our toddler, allowing us to sit back and relax for hours while Grant safely played near the shore.

• Spouting Horn Beach Park: Prepare to be captivated by this natural blowhole that powerfully shoots ocean water high into the air, often accompanied by a distinct “roar.” It’s reminiscent of a miniature Old Faithful, but with a much more frequent and dramatic display. So, upon arriving in Kauai, one of the first things I did was research local farmer’s markets. We were delighted to discover that the Kapaa Farmer’s Market was conveniently located nearby our resort. This market proved to be incredibly well-stocked, overflowing with an abundance of vibrant, fresh fruits and vegetables, and, of course, freshly cracked coconuts—a quintessential Hawaiian treat! It was a true feast for the senses, offering an authentic glimpse into the island’s agricultural richness.

And oh my goodness, Hawaiian avocados! They are truly in a league of their own. So incredibly creamy and boasting an intensely nutty flavor, almost like pine nuts. They were an absolute dream!

Resort Relaxation & Island Wildlife

After days filled with exploring, nothing beat returning to the resort to unwind. We spent countless hours relaxing by the pool, cooling down with delicious shave ice—a mandatory treat in Hawaii—and simply enjoying the serene atmosphere.

One charming and ubiquitous feature of Kauai is its abundance of wild chickens! These feathered residents, often accompanied by their adorable armies of chicks, roam freely everywhere, adding a unique, rustic touch to the island’s landscape.

They offered a comprehensive buffet, which was an absolute blessing, especially for me as an expectant mother who often couldn’t decide what I was craving! One evening, while searching for a Pho restaurant, we accidentally stumbled upon the cozy and inviting Lemongrass Grill. This happy accident turned out to be one of our best dining experiences. The food was absolutely delicious! Garrat indulged in their “drunken duck,” which was simply divine, while I savored a flavorful lemongrass seafood stew. It’s a wonderful option for those craving fresh, aromatic Asian-inspired cuisine.

Because my craving for Pho persisted, we successfully sought out the perfect bowl the very next day at Pho Kauai. Their Pho was excellent, offering that comforting, rich broth we longed for, and their fried rice was equally amazing. It’s a fantastic spot for authentic Vietnamese flavors.

Another highly recommended eatery is Chicken in A Barrel BBQ. We loved it so much that we dined there twice!
